Last month the Skill Hire Construction Training Fund Scholarship students (Forrestfield group) participated in a fun and engaging Practical Site Challenge with a purpose – site awareness for handling construction materials. Skill Hire Trainer/Assessors and the Group Training Field Officers collaborated to create content for this activity, based on industry engagement.
Over several hours teams of four students were timed to:
- Push a wheelbarrow loaded with bricks around an area of the workshop – set up as a simulated work site.
- Stack the bricks into interlocking stacks
- Move and stack timber on gluts effectively
- Split into teams of two and lift and carry plasterboards across the worksite to a designated area
The focus was on manual handling/adopting correct lifting techniques, navigation of obstacles (work-site layout awareness), safe work practices of self, team members and other teams operating at the worksite, effective communication and confidence building to complete tasks at pace.
Seconds were added on for peer observed short-cuts being taken that could leave to unsafe work practices.
It was a great way for students to burn some energy off, while competing against their peers to achieve the ultimate prize – bragging rights and chocolate!
