Environmental Designer
Environmental designers assess, and incorporate all environmental factors into the design of a construction project to promote synergy between objects and their surrounding environment. It incorporates elements of architecture, landscape architecture and environmental geography. They analyse technology, building materials and employ smart design choices and features to create energy efficient homes and buildings using environmentally conscious techniques and materials such as solar energy. Projects may also include historical preservation and conservation related design activities incorporating the effective use of a building’s natural surroundings.

What does a typical day look like?
Every day is different and varies depending on the job, but you may be involved in:
- Designing and creating commercial and residential buildings that are both functional and environmentally responsible
- Using high-tech computer software programs to design projects as well as reading design briefs, blueprints and building specifications
- Applying the histories and theories of planning, policy, environmental, urban, architectural and landscape design to inform design approaches and decision making
- Selecting and approving of materials and techniques as well as estimating costs and surveying sites for a project
- Proposing solutions for environmental sustainability and recommending the placement of new buildings

How to get started
To become an Environmental Designer you will need to complete a Bachelor degree in Environmental Design at university which can take 3 years to complete. Contact individual universities before selecting your year 11 subjects so you can check course availability and whether there are any pre-requisites you need. .
