Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic

Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanics assemble, install, service and repair industrial, commercial and domestic refrigeration and air-conditioning systems in homes, shops, factories, office buildings, sporting facilities and hospitals.

What does a typical day look like?

Each day can be different and vary depending on the job, and you may be involved in:

• Following plans, blueprints and specifications to assemble and install refrigeration or air-conditioning components/systems.
• Working with electricians, pipe fitters and carpenters, installing ducting for air-conditioning
• Starting up, calibrating, testing lines, recording readings and detecting leaks or issues with a  system or unit
• Servicing faulty industrial and household refrigerators and air-conditioning units and repairing or replacing faulty parts

How to get started

To become a fully qualified tradesperson you will need to complete an apprenticeship, Certificate III in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration. You can get a head start on this career by completing a pre-apprenticeship course to gain a Certificate II in Split Air-conditioning and Heat Pump Systems.
