Recognition of Prior Learning | WA
The RPL process matches your existing construction and trade skills and knowledge against course outcomes to help you gain formal qualifications quicker. You’ll work towards achieving your accredited qualifications for proven, respected building and construction skills through a work-based assessment and practical, on-the-job training.
Recognition of Prior Learning (formerly skills recognition) benefits individuals who successfully complete an approved course and an RPL assessment. Normally, such qualifications are only achieved through an apprenticeship pathway but with RPL you may be eligible to claim up to $400 towards the assessment cost, while taking into account the trade skills, knowledge and experience you already have.
Recognition of Prior Learning in WA is an additional benefit for eligible construction workers. Whether you’re looking to future-proof an existing career or just starting out in the industry, you may be able to receive an RPL rebate from CTF.
Eligibility for RPL is dependent on your ability to demonstrate primary and substantial involvement with relevant projects in Western Australia’s construction industry. Involvement must be direct and specifically include on-site construction, installation and/or fabrication activities.
You may be eligible for RPL benefits if you can demonstrate you were directly employed in the industry for a reasonable period within 12 months prior to our course commencement.
All unemployed participants could be required to provide additional documents to assist our CTF team to process any claims.
What is Recognition of Prior Learning?
RPL is an easy way to fast-track your formal qualifications by using your existing skills and knowledge. Past experiences will also be taken into account, as well as any other relevant qualifications you have. The RPL process means you don’t have to waste time learning things you already are competent at.
Should my Registered Training Organisation offer RPL?
Yes. Recognition of Prior Learning in WA is a requirement under the Standards for RTOs.
How long does RPL take?
How long your assessment process is will be dependent on how much RPL you’re applying for. You can find out how much time it’ll take by speaking with your RTO assessor.
Why should I bother?
RPL is beneficial because it allows you to fast-track study pathways and build a stronger, more reliable career in construction.
WA’s building industry is highly competitive. So the skills, knowledge and experience you gain must be recognised and respected to gain the right career and trade-specific opportunities. Rather than complete a qualification from scratch, which is time-consuming and expensive, RPL is much faster. It also gives you:

What courses are approved for Recognition of Prior Learning?
Any of the qualifications listed under our employer grants scheme delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
How flexible is RPL?
Although the RPL assessment process is as attentive as other assessments, the process is flexible and can be determined based on the evidence you provide. The documentation may differ from regular assessments, making it easier and faster to work your way up the ladder. You and your RTO assessor will discuss the process for your situation.
How much does it cost?

Non-Australian citizen or residents can discuss their skills and knowledge recognitions with the Career Centre on 13 23 98.
Once the process and course are successfully completed, eligible participants can claim up to $400 towards the cost.
