Construction Training Fund (CTF) is proud to be an official sponsor of The Big Dig 2025 – an incredible fundraising challenge that unites the construction industry, as teams work together to dig a one-metre-deep trench by hand over a 24-hour period to raise money for youth mental health charity, zero2hero.

About The Big Dig

Now in its ninth year, The Big Dig has become one of WA’s most creative charity events. Inspired by founder Goran Utjesinovic’s background working in construction, the event unites tradies, businesses and everyday Western Australians behind a unified goal of digging deep for youth mental health.

Last year, more than 50 diggers raised over $100,000 to support zero2hero’s programs, which in 2024 alone impacted more than 51,000 young people across 255 WA schools. With demand for youth mental health services rising, the 2025 event is expected to be bigger than ever.

CTF Sponsorship

As part this sponsorship with zero2hero, CTF has committed $10,000 in funding. The sponsorship highlights CTF’s ongoing commitment to building a construction workforce that is not only skilled and sustainable, but also prioritises psychosocial safety, inclusivity and positive mental health.

Championing Mental Health

CTF CEO Tiffany Allen said the CTF was proud to support The Big Dig, which complements the organisation’s work to raise mental health awareness and deliver support and suicide prevention initiatives, helping to build a healthier, more sustainable construction industry in WA.

“Construction is built by people for people – yet construction workers are at risk poor mental health compared to workers in other industries.

By backing zero2hero and this great industry-led event, we’re working towards a culture in construction where every worker feels supported to reach out and seek help.”

Oscar Wharton, Partnerships and Fundraising Manager at zero2hero, said the event had become a powerful demonstration of industry leadership and community support.

“Our programs are all about giving young people the resilience and awareness skills they need for their mental health, and that’s something the construction industry really connects with.

Employers recognise the importance of building resilience early and want future apprentices entering the workforce equipped with these vital skills. By supporting The Big Dig and zero2hero, the industry is backing current apprentices and the next generation of construction workers to be mentally healthy and ready to support themselves and their peers.

On the day, you’ll see CEOs and business leaders from major construction companies in the trench, digging alongside their teammates. It sends a powerful message that the entire industry is coming together to champion mental health.”
