It is an extremely versatile trade with the ability to work in various industries including civil construction, manufacturing, the military, mining and car industries, power plants, and working on commercial and industrial piping systems.

What does a typical day look like?
- Interpreting diagrams, drawings, specifications, blueprints and plans to determine suitable material and sequence of operations
- Constructing and assembling fabricated parts to produce mechanical systems and tools as well as setting up and adjusting tools and equipment
- Operating a range of specialised tools and machinery including lathes, drilling, milling and thermal cutting machines to cut, grind and shape metal and other materials
- Testing, diagnosing and repairing faults with defective tools or machinery, and performing regular maintenance
- Use precision measuring instruments to check parts for accuracy and fit
- Follow strict health and safety policies and procedures, including the use of the appropriate protective clothing
- Examining structural systems with attention to local and state building codes
- May be working in dusty, hot and noisy environments with most of the day standing
- May be required to climb, bend and crouch in confined spaces

- Be able to work to time sensitive deadlines and have good time management skills

- Be good at Maths, English and digital technology
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical and communication skills
- Practical ability and strong attention for detail

How to get started
You will need to complete a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade Apprenticeship to become a qualified Mechanical Fitter.
