Plumbers and Gasfitters are responsible for installing more than just plumbing inside a house. They use a variety of skills, tools and materials to install systems for hot and cold water, heating, sanitation, drainage and guttering, water tanks and solar water heating systems while consistently ensuring their work complies with regulations.

What might a working day look like?
Each day can be different depending on the job, and you may be involved in:
- Renovating, maintaining and repairing existing plumbing
- Installing, maintaining and repairing hot water systems
- Digging trenches, installing vents and flues
- Assembling and installing valves and fittings and joining pipe sections
- Working in a team or independently
- Connecting gas appliances such as hot water heaters, ovens, boilers and furnaces
- Starting up and adjusting new or repaired equipment, and preparing reports
Working hours
- Full-time hours per week

- Working indoors and/or outdoors in most weather conditions
- Working at heights

- Be able to understand technical drawings and plans

How to get started
To become a tradesperson, you will need to complete a Certificate III in Plumbing and Gasfitting apprenticeship. You can get a head start on your career by completing a pre-apprenticeship to gain a Certificate II in Plumbing.
