The construction industry offers many rewarding career opportunities beyond working with the tools. While many people associate careers in construction with trades like carpentry, electrical work or plumbing, there are also a variety of office-based professional roles essential to keeping the Western Australian construction industry moving forward.
The new industry-recognised Certificate II in Building and Construction (Pathway—Technical Support) is a great opportunity for anyone looking to enter the building industry in an administrative role.
What does the new Certificate II involve?
The new certificate focuses on skills like estimating, drafting, scheduling, and project management. It’s actually an update of the existing Certificate II in Building and Construction (Para-professional) to reflect the industry's changing demands.
Who is the new certificate suitable for?
The new certificate is ideal for Year 11 students, who will finish the program in Year 12. It can also form part of a traineeship, which means it’s not just for high school students. So, suppose you’re considering a career in construction and are interested in a non-trade role. In that case, this course will provide you with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to kick-start your career and make you a more attractive candidate for employers in the construction industry.
What careers does a Certificate II in Building and Construction (Technical Support) lead to?
Completion of this course can provide credit towards a relevant higher level qualification, should you wish to pursue further study. It's also an excellent pathway to an apprenticeship or traineeship in this industry. And it leads to a number of different potential sectors within construction, such as civil, residential or commercial.
It’s designed as an entry point for roles like Draftspersons, Project Managers, Pre-start Consultants, Contract Administrators, Schedulers, Estimators and Designers, the technical skills which drive the success of every stage of a construction project.
What are the advantages of studying for the Cert II in technical support?
This is the first step of a career path that doesn't have to be entry-level. For students who aspire to become architects or draughtspersons or want to work in the building and construction industry but don’t want to get into the trades, this could be the blueprint for their future.
It offers students who complete it the chance of a rewarding and fulfilling career in construction, with a sustained amount of work coming through that allows you to plan your future.
How long does it take?
This course is currently being offered at two TAFES in WA, NMT Balga and SMT Thornlie. This course is delivered over two years, with students attending TAFE one day a week for two years.
