Apprenticeships & Traineeships

An apprenticeship or traineeship mixes work and training for a nationally recognised qualification.

Apprentices and trainees are trained and employed through Group Training Organisations or directly by an employer, which is known as “direct indenture”, using a member of the Australian Apprenticeship Support Network. Australian Apprenticeships is a great place to find out more.

Apprenticeships take two to four years full-time to complete, including formal classroom off-the-job training as well as on-the-job training. To qualify for a trade certificate the apprentice must demonstrate practical competence and complete their off-the-job training.

If you employ an apprentice or trainee, you may be eligible to receive a CTF grant totaling up to $21,000 over the full term of the apprenticeship to help reduce the cost of training.

If you employ your apprentice or trainee through a Group Training Organisation, they will receive the grant and use it to reduce your costs.

To find out more about what you may be able to claim if you employ an apprentice or trainee, see the CTF Levy & Funding Guidelines here and visit the following sites to see what other incentives and support may be available to you:

In addition to our grants, you may also be eligible to receive apprentice and trainee incentives from the Commonwealth Government. You can find out more at the Federal Government’s Australian Apprentices Employer Incentives site.

If you are an apprentice or trainee who successfully completed a pre-apprenticeship in a recognised construction trade you may be eligible to apply for an Award of $250 from the Construction Training Fund.
